Education vs. Propaganda Education is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as: The process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university; while propaganda is defined as: Information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view. (Oxford University Press, 2017) By just the definition alone, one can spot several differences between education and propaganda. Whereas education and propaganda are different as in education is truth and propaganda is lies, they are also similar in the fact both are a form of indoctrination and aimed towards aiding the government’s own agenda. Education is the foundation for truth. Sometimes, however, the buildings, buses, and teachers for the all-black schools were lower in quality. Often, African American children had to travel far to get to their school.† (Strauss) This passage does not begin to hit on the disadvantages and limitations placed on black students and citizens during the Jim Crow era. This is only one example of one textbook downplaying segregation. Native American history that is taught within the school is often misleading as well as incorrect. Students learn about the first Thanksgiving in elementary, but not about the massacres that were before and after. Students don’t hear about how the English settlers came in to claim land that was not theirs. W hen American History is taught it is taught from the beginning of the Europeans finding America instead of the beginning of America. American historians as well as textbooks ignore the fact that America has an extensive history before the European conquest. (Forbes, pp.349) School boards are allowing biased curriculum into the school systems, allowing students to be misled. This is a form of propaganda. But why use propaganda in the education system?
